Money

The local currency is the Yen. Credit cards are widely accepted but, in rural areas particularly, you should carry cash as a back-up. ATMs are available in the main towns.

Climate

Weather in Kyoto in May means comfortable temperatures, ranging from 17°C (63°F) to 25°C (77°F), creating ideal conditions for exploring the historical and cultural riches of the region. There is some chance of rainfall and evenings can be cooler so layers are advised.

Safety

Crime in Kyoto is generally low. Petty crimes, such as pickpocketing and theft, can occur in crowded tourist areas, so visitors should take normal precautions to protect their belongings. Avoid leaving valuables unattended and keep an eye on your belongings when in busy tourist areas or on public transportation.

Healthcare

Make sure you have adequate travel health insurance and accessible funds to cover the costs of any medical treatment.

Gratuities

In Japan, tipping is generally not customary and can even be considered rude. Service is included: When you dine out or use services, you are already paying for good service, so additional tips are not expected. Cultural etiquette: Instead of tipping, gratitude is often expressed through polite words or small gifts, known as “kokorozuke”. While tipping is not common there may be rare situations where a small gratuity is appreciated, but this is not the norm. Overall, it’s best to respect the local customs and avoid leaving tips in Japan.
