Getting back to the core | An interview with Jerry Nazzal, owner of Express International Group in Cairo, as it rejoins OMNI after a break of over 25 years.
Express International was started in 1970 by George Nazzal.  George left his native Palestine in 1948, migrating to the USA where he worked for Dean.  When the company found George could speak Arabic, he was transferred to Lebanon, but George wanted his own business. When the opportunity showed, he chose Cairo as his base, to take advantage of the huge US military presence, the opportunities to work with foreign embassies and the business that came from the presence of the Suez canal.

George was successful in business.  When he handed over his interests to his son, Jerry, he passed on three enterprises:  A packaging materials manufacturing company; the largest instant coffee making plant in the Middle East; and the moving company, the smallest organisation in the group.  “But the moving company was my Dad’s baby,” said Jerry.

In 2026, all three businesses have grown year-on-year, and all are thriving. The moving company is the largest in Egypt, with 131 people working in the office.  “We have a very loyal team,” said Jerry.  “That, for me, is the sign of success.  I am proud to have been able to maintain and grow what Dad started.” As well as moving, the company has diversified to include a large fine art operation, 3PL logistics and a trucking service. These help to provide consistent revenues all year round, balancing the seasonal moving work.  The company also has an operation in Dubai.

Express International had been a member of OMNI since the very early days in the 1980s.  It left in the late 1990s when George decided being part of such a group was no longer necessary for the business.  “That might have been the right decision then, but now it seems there is value to be had by being part of a group,” said Jerry. “So I decided to have another look.  OMNI is still one of the most prestigious groups around and I feel it is fitting for Express to be part of the group again.”  Express is also a member of Harmony, FIDI, IAM, LACMA, PAIMA and Euromovers.

Express International is not a large booker.  Much of its work is initiated from the USA and Europe and it works closely with most of the key RMCs.  The company has also handled the ITGBL (International Through Government Bill of Lading) for the US government for the last five years.

Being members of so many other groups, and having been away from OMNI for so long, what does Jerry believe is the unique attraction of OMNI for a company such as his? He explained that we are living in what seem to be troublesome times and, in the future, he doesn’t see it getting easier. “So you need to get back to a core, because the core works.  The core are the companies that have been around for a while and continue to be successful. They are the guys I want to be around because I know that it’s they who will keep going. It’s that core unit that I see as the unique value for my company from OMNI membership.”
